How do you dress up as Schubert for Halloween? Ascot, round eyeglasses, and sideburns. Musical genius is hard to dress up as, but “Erlkonig” is always an appropriately Halloweeny song.

The vast majority of arrangements are by male singers, but I love this arrangement for solo violin performed by the great Hilary Hahn. Erlkonig requires the singer to perform three voices — the father, the child, and the Elf-king — and the piano to do the fourth, the horse.
