Schubertiade YYC 2026: Performer Bios

We are thrilled and honoured to welcome the following performers to Schubertiade YYC:

Bellita Ensemble: Hyun Jung Song and Cathy Cheon

Pianists Hyun Jung Song and Cathy Cheon perform together as an ensemble, sharing a love for collaborative music-making through duo and chamber performances. Both have diverse musical backgrounds in performance and teaching, and are motivated by the joy of exploring repertoire together and connecting with fellow musicians. They have appeared in various concerts and projects, and continue to value music as a space for growth, community, and artistic exchange.

Tony Cavalleri

Tony Cavalleri holds a Bachelor of Music from San Diego State University (2004) and has been teaching music for over twenty years. He studied voice with Mary MacKenzie Pyatt and Donna Olson, and has sung with the San Diego Master Chorale and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. Since relocating to Calgary in 2019, Tony has continued his work as a music educator with the Calgary Board of Education. He has long been drawn to Schubert’s music for its lightness, beauty, and emotional complexity. As both a performer and educator, Tony values music’s ability to build connection and shared meaning. He is grateful to his family for their unwavering support.

Marilyn Chau

Pianist Marilyn Chau completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance at the University of Winnipeg and has worked with many different singers and instrumentalists in and around Calgary since 2003. Currently, she is studying at Mount Royal University’s Advanced Performance Program (APP). When Marilyn is not practicing, she loves to hang out at home where she homeschools her three kids.

Nairilys Garcia

Nairilys Garcia Sogamozo, born in Punto Fijo, Venezuela, is a Soprano and a third-year music student at the University of Calgary. She has been studying voice with internationally renowned baritone Phillip Addis during this past year. Her experience ranges from classical soloist and choir repertoire to Disney princesses’ songs. She is looking forward to participating in the Schubertiade to have fun sharing her passion for Schubert’s music with everybody.

Derek Lee

Born in Calgary, Derek Lee began his musical journey when he was four years old with Dr. Diane Ferguson in Whitecourt. His passion for music blossomed early and upon relocating to Calgary, he sought mentorship from Kathy Dornian. Derek went on to complete his ARCT Piano Performance in the Royal Conservatory of Music and has since been active as a soloist and collaborative artist. Today, Derek is a third-year student at the University of Calgary and is pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with Dr. Jani Parsons. Derek is a first-prize recipient in the V International Gloria Artis Music Competition and debuted in Vienna at the IV International Gloria Artis Talents Festival. He is the second-prize laureate of the 2025 Canadian Music Competition and was awarded a full-scholarship invitation to the “Gathering of the Stars” in Sherbrooke. He additionally holds third place and the Dorothy Buckley Prize for the best Canadian work performance at the 2025 ARMTA Piano Competition in Edmonton. His musical career has granted him the incredible opportunity to perform in advanced masterclasses with internationally renowned pianists, such as Ursula Oppens, Nicolas Namoradze, Roberto Plano, Yakov Kasman, and Henry Kramer. Over the summer, Derek continued his artistic development at the Vivace International Music Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Anagha Mankekar

Anagha Mankekar is an 11-year-old musician who has been learning and performing across various genres of both Indian and Western classical music. She is currently studying piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music and is also teaching herself guitar. Anagha trains under her music teacher, Andrea Hill, whose guidance has helped shape her musical journey. She is deeply grateful for Andrea’s support and inspiration.

Beyond music, Anagha enjoys skiing, skating, and golfing in her free time. She has a strong interest in machine learning and AI coding, and she loves exploring creative projects in technology. Anagha is fluent in Spanish and French, and she can sing in more than ten languages across a wide range of musical styles.

Oliver Munar

Oliver Munar (he/him/his) is a Calgary-based tenor currently specializing in opera, oratorio and musical theatre. He is equally at home singing and performing Lieder and other art songs both as a vocalist and as a pianist. Oliver has a Grade X diploma in piano studies from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and studied at the prestigious Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden-bei-Wien, Austria, where he worked with some of the world’s leading interpreters of Lieder such as Roger Vignoles, Julius Drake, Helmut Deutsch, Elly Ameling, Robert Holl and the late Dr. Deen Larsen. He also holds a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of Alberta where he trained with internationally acclaimed tenor John Tessier. Coming engagements include roles of Le Remendado (Bizet’s Carmen) and the Emperor (Puccini’s Turandot) in a production with Calgary Civic Symphony, and a self-produced recital entitled Never Too Late (part of the ProArts at Noon concert series) in which he will sing favourites that are not normally sung by a tenor.

Tanisi Sinha

Hello, my name is Tanisi and I have done voice for the past 3 years. I really enjoy singing and I am trying for level 3 in RCM. My voice teacher, Andrea Hill, really encourages me to sing. I would like to thank my parents especially, because they are the ones who put me into voice lessons. Other than voice, I do Karate, where I am currently a green belt. I like hiking and skiing.

Brent Tucker

Brent Tucker was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan where he obtained a Bachelor of Music Education at the Universi ty of Regina, with pipe organ being his major instrument. Subsequent studies have included lessons with Neil Cockburn, Wendy Markosky, Kobie Kloppers, and he has also studied improvisation with David Simon. After leading church music ministries in Regina and Moose Jaw, Sask, and St. Catharines Ontario, Brent moved to Calgary in 2002 where he became the principal organist of Central United Church. Since November of 2006, he has served at Summit View United Church, conducting the Summit View Sanctuary and Chamber Choirs as well as the Summit View Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Tucker is the conductor of the Calgary Arts Academy Adult Choir, teaches private pipe organ and piano lessons, and has been known to occasionally moonlight as an accompanist and harpsichordist. When not involved in musical pursuits, Brent enjoys learning new things, a good card or board game, cups of coffee, and driving his ’79 Mercury Cougar.

Tamara Vardomskaya

Tamara Vardomskaya grew up in Ottawa, initially studying violin. She attended her first Schubertiade at PianoForte Studios in Chicago while working on her PhD in linguistics and studying voice with Patrice Michaels. She moved to Calgary in 2023, and now studies voice with Andrea Hill and flute with Lucie Jones. Finding no Schubertiade in Calgary, she decided to use her experience in IT project management and planning academic conferences to start one. She has written and published science fiction and fantasy, enjoys visual art and drew the Schubertiade YYC logo, and has dabbled in almost all other arts, from dance to garment sewing. She thanks her family for tolerating this madness.

Summit View Orchestra

The Summit View Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer ensemble comprised of both recreational and professional players. The orchestra presents a spring and fall concert each year, often featuring a concerto with featured soloist. Past performances include Symphonies 101 and 104 by Haydn, Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C minor and Double Piano Concerto in E flat major, Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor by Max Bruch, Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major, Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 11 in D major, along with Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 and Piano Concertos 1 and 3.

Summit View Chamber Choir

The Summit View Chamber Choir is an auditioned ensemble comprised of about 24 singers that focuses on challenging choral repertoire ranging from Gregorian Chant through to modern classical. This chorus sings in worship on the second Sunday of the month from September to June, as well as special services such as Evening Compline. In addition, the ensemble periodically combines with other local choirs to present performances of large-scale choral works. Past concerts highlights have included Lord Nelson Mass and Theresienmesse by Haydn, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Faure’s Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in G, and our most recent concert of Mozart’s Coronation Mass.
