Happy spring and looking forward to a new Schubertiade season!

Dear Schubertiade fans of Calgary,

Happy spring (even though it’s been snowing every morning here)!

After a very busy March and Easter weekend, we are ready to move ahead with preparations for Schubertiade YYC II for January 30, 2027.

Schubertiade 2: Schubert’s Revenge?

Schubertiade 2: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut?

Schubertiade 2: This Time It’s Personal?

Schubertiade 2: The End Continues?

Maybe I’m showing my age.

Now that the word is out that Schubertiade pays its artists, I am hoping to see a lot more turnout and fun this year, and I am really hoping for more instrument diversity, although we always love the piano and voice that Schubert wrote amazing things for.

Tell your friends who play violin or cello to get together and tackle some of his gorgeous piano trios, or even a quartet or two if you can get another violinist and a violist in. His works for two horns would be very cool to hear resonating in the Summit View sanctuary. And of course, we are always open to re-arrangements for instruments and instrument combinations that were not invented in Schubert’s day, like the modern flute, or the saxophone, or the electric guitar.

Maybe Schubertiade 2: Electric Boogaloo is a thing.

To give you ideas and as your fun link of the post, I quite enjoyed this rendition of “Gretchen am Spinnrade”, with recorded piano, by alto saxophonist Chika Inoue

Simply shot, and with really lovely phrasing and dynamics reflecting the text without words.

Enjoy, and practice, and see you next month!
